Bate Bay crowned Australia’s Best Beach for 2026

As if we needed another reason to love living here…

Sutherland Shire’s iconic stretch of coastline along Bate Bay has officially been named Australia’s Best Beach for 2026— and locals will probably say it’s about time.

The announcement, made by Tourism Australia, comes after Beach Ambassador Brad Farmer reviewed nearly 12,000 beaches across the country before landing on our very own backyard.

And it’s not hard to see why.

Stretching close to five kilometres, the coastline takes in some of the most loved beaches in Sydney — from Greenhills through Wanda, Elouera and North Cronulla, all the way around to Cronulla, Oak Park Beach and Gunnamatta Bay. It’s a stretch of sand that offers something for everyone, whether it’s surf, swim, or just a morning walk with a coffee in hand.

Brad Farmer AM, who has spent decades researching and visiting thousands of Australia’s beaches, said the 2026 list focuses on places that offer something a little more genuine.

“The community-minded Bate Bay Beaches are, quite simply, stunning with the vast 4.8 kilometre stretch of undeveloped sand at Greenhills, Wanda and Elouera (Sydney’s longest),” he said.

“In all, a collection of nine beaches, including four ocean pools and Gunnamatta Bay still water bathing enclosure, made the final cut — ticking almost every box against an exhaustive 130-point evaluation criteria. With glorious golden sands and a cosmopolitan vibe, this picturesque stretch of coastline feels like a hidden gem right under your nose, but is easily accessible by train from the city centre.”

He added that this year’s list is about celebrating places that feel a little more special.

“This year’s list is a celebration of the quiet, soulful spots that define our coastal identity and offer a true escape for those willing to wander a little further.”

For those looking to experience it firsthand, there’s no better way than getting out and exploring it for yourself.

Each year, Sutherland 2 Surf gives thousands of people the chance to do exactly that — running from Sutherland down to Wanda Beach, finishing right alongside this award-winning stretch of coastline. It’s a unique way to take it all in, whether you’re chasing a time or simply soaking up the atmosphere.
